Pancake day in London

Pancakes

There is a ‘day’ these days for everything, but one that’s stood the test of time is PANCAKE DAY! The last day of feasting before Lent 2019 starts is reserved for pancakes. Otherwise known as Shrove Tuesday, or Fat Tuesday, is the day for pancake races and fabulous pancake specials and when you are London there are a few great places to be.

The 47th day before Easter Sunday, preceding Ash Wednesday, Pancake Day symbolizes the last day of feasting before Lent. A day to use up all the rich ingredients that are usually sacrificed during fasting, like eggs, butter, and milk. It is also for confession and repentance, but for the most part it is a tradition of marvelous pancake races, flipping, experimental recipes and yummy tastings.

A pancake race consists of people racing while carrying thin pancakes in frying pans, flipping the pancakes as they go. The winner is the first to the finish line with a pancake that isn’t burnt. A humorous activity to watch and take part in – some people get so excited about participating in the races they take off from work J

This year it falls on March 5th and while you are in London there are several ways to celebrate and indulge, here are a few to start you off.
